Keeping Your Water Heater Working Properly

Your water heater provides you with all the hot water for cooking, cleaning, laundry, and bathing. They are constantly working to ensure that you have ample access to hot water when you need it. However, they are mechanical systems that are made up of many parts. Many of these parts are subject to heavy usage which takes a toll on them. So, it is important to regularly perform maintenance on your water heater to make sure it is always working. Here are some things you can do to keep your water heater performing its best:

  • Flush The Heater: Water is often full of minerals that make the water “hard”. Hard water is usually not a threat to our health, but it can cause the formation of scale and mineral buildups. This will then lead to a decrease in the energy efficiency of your water heater and reduce the lifespan of your heater.

  • Check the Pressure Relief Valve: All water heaters of a temperature & pressure release valve in case too much pressure builds up in the tank or it gets too hot. If the valve is malfunctioning, it can lead to disaster. So, visually inspect the T&P valve annually. Start by turning off the gas supply and/or electricity to your water heater. Then place a bucket under the valve to catch any water discharge. Finally, release the valve’s trip lever and water, steam, and air should easily come out.

  • Replace the Anode Rod Every 3 to 5 Years: An anode rod is a sacrificial device that prevents the inside of the tank from corroding. It is a steel tube usually made of aluminum, zinc, or magnesium. It attracts elements in the water that cause oxidation, keeping it away from the interior of the tank. It should be replaced every three to five years to increase the longevity of your tank and reduce any metallic tastes in your water.

  • Insulate Your Tank: Thermal wraps can help reduce the energy consumption of your water heater. Visit your local hardware store for thermal wraps to reduce heat loss while on standby and help maintain water temperature.
